Collecting increased transit fees for transport of Russian gas by Bulgaria and Poland and donating the win to Ukraine is a valiant act
Collecting high fees for transit of Russian gas by Bulgaria and Poland and donating the excessive win as help to Ukraine will accelerate the end of the war.
After the termination of gas transit over the Yamal pipeline over Poland, North Stream 1 over the Baltic sea, and the Soyuz/Druhzba over Ukraine at the end of 2024, the South Stream over Turkey and Bulgaria has a monopoly. This monopoly allows increasing the transit fees. Gas buyers from West Europe have not significantly decreased the gas consumption and now import liquid gas from Russia. They pay for liquifying the gas, vessel transport and regasification of the gas. Vessels cargo fees are higher compared to transit over pipelines.

Bulgaria has the unique possibilities to increase the gas transit fees per 10€/MWh, or 1 500 000 000€/year, so that for gas buyers will still be cheaper to pay for pipeline transit compared to transport with vessels. The money collected by the increased fees should be used to support Ukraine. This can be done by buying out Ukrainian hryvnia in exchange for Euros at a good rate, so that the inflation in Ukraine slows down; paying for weapons production in Ukraine, as Denmark does; or increasing domestic production of weapons and donating them to Ukraine.
In the last variant at the same time new jobs will be created in Bulgaria and the end of the war will be accelerated. Without this trick for Ukrainian aid, funded by high gas transit fees, there is increased risk that the South Stream pipeline stops working, e.g. because the compression station in Russia explodes. From the buyers of Russian gas no big resistance is expected, as they are not impressed from the seller and because they look for the cheapest variant.
The same applies to Poland. It can resume the pipeline transport of gas from Russia, applying increased transit fees, which are still cheaper compared to gas transport using vessels. Then use the revenues from the increased fees in the aforementioned ways to support Ukraine. I just proposed this idea to the Foreign Affairs ministry in Warszawa, let’s see what will happen.
To all of you, who morally support Russia, please inform yourself what is happening there. In Russia for expressing opinions, different from the official ones, for decades there is lifelong imprisonment. Changes in state policy by regular elections in practice are not possible. And the revenue from selling oil and gas is used as wages for thugs and for bomb production. Trade with Russia guarantees there incomes, which ensures that for people there the situation will not change.
